31 Days of Practicing Faith

In October, I am free writing for five minutes a day—raw and unedited—on practicing faith in the every day. Each day is based on a different prompt from 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes

{Day 1} - Walk I love going on walks with my kids, the unhurried kind. Often we will go on walks with the end in mind—what’s next when we get home or just to get exercise. We don’t get to talk much and in the end it was just time spent moving through space. But when we slow down and walk through the neighborhood noticing what we see or talking about our days, it has a different feel altogether. They might walk with their little hands in mine and speak freely. It’s this building of relationship that makes the walk worth it. We talk about our relationship with God being our “walk with God,” but so often I am running ahead of Him. I am in a rush and pushing Him out of the time He just wants to be with me. I don’t talk freely with Him or let the things I notice throughout my day point me back to conversation with the God of the Universe who wants to take a moment to hear from me. Slow me down, Lord. Remind me of those brisk fall afternoon walks with my children and the joy they bring to my heart. The sound of leaves crunching under our feet. The laughter ringing through the trees. I am your child, after all. Does it bring joy to your heart when I let myself really walk with you through my day? Take my hand and let’s go for a walk.
